Summer School on Salt Intrusion in Estuaries

June 22nd – July 2nd, 2026. Granada, Spain

AIMS

The school aims to provide students with an integrated view of salt intrusion processes in estuaries through thematic lectures, discussions of case studies on salt intrusion issues from around the world, and hands-on practical sessions led by internationally renowned experts. 

Specific topics will cover from fundamental concepts to advanced applications or current knowledge of salt intrusion in estuaries

  • Measurements and data analysis

  • Salt transport mechanisms, salt balance, and turbulent mixing

  • Process-based modelling of salinity in estuaries

  • Forcasting of salt intrusion 

  • Impacts on water supplies and ecosystems

This Summer School is intended for MSc and PhD students who are interested in hydrodynamic and transport processes affecting salt intrusion, and on cutting-edge applications  Our students are expected to be familiar with basic concepts (at least, end level of Sc. or Eng. bachelor) of: ocean waves, shallow-water and transport equations, boundary layer properties, mathematical and statistical methods, and computer programming.

Schedule

The course consists of a 10 days period. The school is comprised by 38 hours of lectures and assisted practices, approx. 10 hours of field excursion to a desalination plant in the Andalusian coast, and 10 hours of students’ presentations. The student’s working hours also include: short individual presentations (10 min/student) in which they introduce themselves and their research interests; and teamwork to carry out practices. Short projects are expected to be carried out by students groups of 4-5 students each under supervision of the lecturers. Students are expected to present the outcome of the case studies (approx. 15 min/group).

Field excursion to the desalination plant is scheduled the June, 28th.

How to prepare

During the summer school, we expect each student to give a presentation about his/her own research. Presentation should not be longer than 10 min, so that, please, time it in advance. We also expect students to work in teams and give a final presentation on the short-projects developed during the course.

Applications and Fees

– If you are interested to attend the summer school, please submitt to saltwater.school@ugr.es a expression of interest, a short CV (include age and gender) and name/s of 1/2 reference person/s. 

– Fee: €985. The fee covers accommodation in shared twin rooms, registration, lecture notes and field trip. Attendants will have to cover their own travel expenses.

About the city

Granada is an university city. The 30% of its population are students, lecturers, researchers, and administrative staff directly linked to the University of Granada. A lively student atmosphere has flourished here, giving rise to the development of a multicultural and vibrant study destination. Thanks to its rich historical and cultural legacy, and to the presence of a pro-active university community, Granada has firmly established itself as a vibrant cultural hub. The city has been home to Iberian, Roman, Jewish, Muslim and Christian communities, all of which have left their own distinctive footprint on the city. The world-renowned Alhambra Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of medieval Islamic architecture. (Reserve your tickets well in advance!!) The Sierra Nevada range dominates the sights and climate of the city. The subtropical coast, just 65 km southwards, offer scenic beaches and exceptional weather throughout the year.

Plan your stay

Granada Airport (AGP) is located 16 kilometers from the city. There are car rentals, taxis, and bus service to Granada (recommended). Domestic flights connect Granada with Madrid and Barcelona, among other cities. We also recommend you to fly directly to Málaga (AGP). Málaga Airport is connected with many international destinations from all over the world. Málaga is the nearest international airport and is only 90 minutes from Granada by road. There are regular direct bus connections from Málaga Airport to Granada Bus Station.

Participants will be accommodated in the University Housings of the Corrala de Santiago. The Corrala de Santiago is an outstanding and cosy Granadian-style building from the XVI th century. It is located in the historicand lively district of Realejo. The Corrala is only 5 minutes walking distance from the city centre. Lectures and meetings during the Summer School lectures take place in the Corrala de Santiago, too.
